Carrie and Lucas’ wedding day was a beautiful and emotional celebration of love. It was a warm spring day in March, actually the most perfect weather, and their day was filled with family, friends, and of course some tractors. If you are around the two of them, even for only a few minutes, you can tell their love is a special one. One that will hold strong for a lifetime.
Weddings are always filled with emotion, but this one was different. I have been so honored to be welcomed into Carrie’s family throughout many stages of their life. Just weeks after my mom died, Carrie’s older sister called me and told me that their mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, asking me to take pictures of their family. I had been in that same spot just months before, and I wept after we spoke. I hurt so deeply knowing what they all had to go through.
The day I took their family pictures, I was welcomed into their sadness and joy at the same time. They laughed with each other even though they knew that these pictures were probably the last. Carrie’s mom’s warm smile, thankful heart, and amazing Christmas decorations will always be how I remember her.
When Carrie asked me to be her wedding photographer, I was so completely honored. We will forever be in some sort of club, knowing and understanding what the other has experienced. The day was a beautiful, joyous occasion celebrating Carrie and Lucas’ love, but everyone felt the undertone of sadness knowing that her mom should be there – as will all the days feel for the rest of time. It’s the definition of bittersweet.
Carrie and Lucas, you couldn’t have done a better job honoring your love and also honoring your mom on your wedding day. I will always believe that your mom had some pull in you two getting together. My deepest, most heartfelt, THANK YOU for allowing me to document your special day! I wish you both nothing but the absolute best in life.
